Pay freeze on the horizon?

Friday, March 05, 2010

Public sector employees could face a national pay freeze in 2011/12, Finance Secretary John Swinney has said.

Speaking at a COSLA conference in St Andrews, Swinney (pictured) said he was currently in discussions with the Treasury and the COSLA president for a "common approach" over the issue.

He told council leaders that by March 2011 there would be a "clean slate" on pre-arranged pay deals allowing for a national policy to come into play.

However, he added that it was too early say whether a pay freeze would be struck.

Swinney said: "Quite clearly the management of pay policy will be a very significant factor in wrestling with the issues that we face. In this respect we have the opportunity, to work collaboratively with the public sector, in the setting of pay arrangements, particularly in the period of the next spending review because by March 2011 there will be no pay deals in place that have to be honoured – we will have a clean slate."

He said tackling the issue of public sector pay needed a "clear and collaborative discussion" between the UK government, Scottish government and local government in order "to maximise our effectiveness in being able to deliver".

does he mean that a clean slate is the green light for no pay rises for the public sector? If he does then we are in for some fireworks for sure. It could mean the end of the SNP what will Salmond say?

It is ok for high paid executives to agree a pay freeze. I can't afford not to have 1. All utility bills have increased. I need some extra cash for this and other things that have increased

This statement and thought is a disgrace. Why should we, Public Sector Employees be the scapegoats for the mis-management of bankers? Why should we be the scapegoats for a ludicrous con by the snp to get votes in an election by freezing the Council Tax? That was and still is, absolute madness. it was always inevitable that the money missing from this would have to be found somewhere. They want the money back from Public Sector Employees only! and not the whole of those who are paying Council Tax, why should we be left to pick up the tab? It's a disgrace and shocking
