Public reveals opposition to ID cards
Monday, July 27, 2009
A YouGov poll commissioned by the Sunday People has revealed that almost four-fifths of people think money for ID cards could be better spent.
Just 15 per cent of those asked said ID cards were worth the projected £5bn cost. More than a third of respondents indicated that they would rather the money went into the state pension.
Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said: "I have yet to meet anyone who thinks ID cards are a good idea. They should be scrapped without delay."
Phil Booth, national coordinator of NO2ID said: "The game is up. The ID scheme is exposed as a bureaucrat's luxury that can now only be imposed by bullying and subterfuge.
"We don't trust Whitehall to 'manage' our identities and we don't want it to spend massive amounts of tax money to do so. If the Prime Minister wants to look responsive and decisive he will shut down the programme on Monday morning."
The poll questioned 1,765 adults between 21-23 July.
