MoD spent £10bn on ICT

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

More than £10.1bn has been spent on ICT by the Ministry of Defence between 1997 and 2009.

In a written answer to a parliamentary question, defence minister Andrew Robathan revealed details of departmental spending on ICT each year.

The lowest spend in any one year was £527m. Spending on actual IT infrastructure fluctuated year on year, being higher in some early years than latter years. However, since 2005 overall spending has increased significantly with the addition of PFI service charges.

In 2007-2008 of the total £1.1bn ICT bill, approximately 43 per cent was spent on the PFI service charge. The minister confirmed that this charge includes the cost of the Defence Fixed Telephone Service.

Robathan said that the figures released cover "the operating costs of operational, satellite and non-operational information technology and telecommunications".

When I read this at glance there is an idea of "technometrics" (to name simply on how to measure the use of ICT in terms of certain currency), that must be a great gap between country to country or instituion to the similar ones. It should have also happened to personal use, where the wealthy members of people must be far exceeding to those who live simple
