'CERN-like' mathematics institute proposed

02 December 2010

The European Science Foundation has called for the formation of an institute of industrial mathematics to link academia and industry, thus acting as a platform for innovation.

The institute, proposed in a report by the foundation, would help attract collaboration from the highest calibre of researchers, and would act in much the same way as Europe's Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN), which has spawned the worldwide web and the Large Hadron Collider.

Andreas Schupper, of Bayer Technology Services GMbH, a contributor to the report, said: "It may often be invisible in the final product or to the final consumer, but mathematics is the fundamental ingredient to many innovations that help us respond to a rapidly changing economic landscape.

"Creating a 'CERN for mathematics', the European Institute of Mathematics for Innovation, will promote industry and academic collaboration, stimulating innovation, growth and job creation. As such, it could help achieve Europe's 2020 objectives of sustainable growth through a knowledge-based economy."

The institute is envisaged as a network of world-class mathematicians, providing talent on tap for companies seeking innovation. As a centralised organisation, it would also support small and medium enterprises aross the continent.

Mario Primicerio, of Universita degli Studi di Firenze, who chaired the report, added: "Bringing together mathematicians in one organisation will make it easier for companies to access the expertise they need, while at the same time facilitating access to funds by eliminating overlap at national level."

The foundation has also called for funds for a specific industrial and applied mathematics project in the upcoming European Union 8th Framework Programme.

Although I am not against the creation of an EIMI (I personally believe that it would be good thing), the real problem in the 'real' world is that we need to provide throughout the EU the innovation infrastructure for the masses, thus opening up the full potential of Europe to develop the future technological industries of the future. Thus creating whole new global markets worth trillions of EURO over the next five decades. For the history of S&T tells us that up to 75% of all the inventions that have made the modern world what it is today, emanated initially in the minds of independent people outside the confines of mainstream industry or academia - known as the initial ideas people and basic catalysts to launch life-changing events in the history of the world. Therefore our greatest need is to open up the whole aspect of innovation across Europe, for leading international research says, that we are the most creative block of people in the world and up to 70% of the formation of the modern world emanates from the minds of EU citizen. Blowing away the myth that the USA holds this mantle.

If therefore we created innovation centres for the people in every European State, we would see great ideas emerge and where then our world class universities and industry could exploit and capitalise on these world-changing thoughts and ideas. For we in Europe have to renew 'the thinking out of the box' mentality that made Europe so great and the leading industrial power in the world.

Presently the innovation chain of the EU is broken and this shattered linkage is not allowing the EU to excel and to take the high ground in wealth creation. Overall we have to review our fundamentals, fix the innovation chain and put the necessary creating infrastructure in place if we are to attain in the future the world's leading economic and dynamic power block.

I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. David Hill's proposal. If one harnesses the brain-power of the most creative geographical portion of people on the face of this planet, then one can only surmise the possibilities; it truly would be advantageous for the rest of humanity. Europe and its people, both in the past, present and future; will always be the pinnacle, and the most logical geo-location for such a grand plan in the unification of great minds. I also concur with Dr. Hill in saying that "innovation" centres would be beneficial if they were to be strategiclaly positioned in every European State, thus, allowing for the brightest of minds to congregate as one force; gaining the freedom they so desperately require in order to pursue their dreams and ideas for the betterment of the human-race. By allowing intelligentsia to flourish throughout the European states, one is unlocking the door to a future that is filled with endless possibilities for the advancement of the species, genus Homo.

Thanks Sam for your support and intelligence. China has known for many years that for them to take the high ground in world sustainable economics, they have to become the most innovative nation in the world. This mindset has been at the centre of their economic strategy for 20 yeras now. We should know as one of our members HE Jian Song, former vice-premier of China for 13 years created the 'blueprint' and which China will use until they get to where they wish to be - the most powerful economic power ever seen. Unfortunately this will cause an horrendous out-of-balance situation nad where many countries will be come totally reliant on China and subservient to it. The threat not as yet perceived in the West, but it will come to pass on our present path.

I was in communication with Jack Kilby just three months before his passing. These are the type of people we need to come out of the shadows as Texas Instruments did not even know what he was doing 'privately' and never helped in the least at the prototype stage. That single invention allowed the creation of a global industry now turning over US$1.7 trillion by being the sole invention that underpins it all. Tomlinson's email is the same where he invented it for his own personal use and not Verison his employer who's top management did not know about his email invention until 5 years after. Just imagine what ten of these equivalent inventions would create in global revenues, trillions upon trillions of EURO.
Basically at the moment we are blind and the whole of the EU needs to get real and understand what really the history of S&T tells us. Unfortunately the powers that be, commissioners et al have totally closed minds as they only see the future from the past. We have just got to get out of this time warp for our own good !
